Cookin’ At Cook: A Babe in Transplantland
By Jim McClelland (Alpha Iota ‘78)

Despite its name, Cookin’ At Cook is definitely not a cookbook. Although the subtitle is (A Babe in Transplantland), the book is a life-changing inspirational book. The fact that the story line of the book is Loren McClelland’s first bone marrow transplant is secondary.

If this were a book about a bone marrow transplant, it wouldn’t have ever been written. There are hundreds of publishers who would easily say, “Been there, done that and couldn’t come close to selling the movie rights.”

The real story is how a little boy and his family can survive such an ordeal and still find joy and humor in the world. The real story is how a little boy and his family can still keep their faith when everything on the outside tells them to give up. The lives touched by this little boy’s plight far exceeded what most “healthy” people could only dream of and through it all, Loren and his family are able to keep a unique perspective on the outcome.

The Last Flight of Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Junior USNR

By Bowen P. Weisheit (Lambda ‘40)

Once tactical decisions in major battles are documented as a part of official history, it is not olny difficult to change the record but often equally difficult for professionals to accept the change. However, MAJ Bowen Weisheit succeeds on both accounts in setting the record straight.

Fifty years after the initial sortie of of a flight of VF-8 from USS Hornet during the Battle of Midway, ENS Kelly’s flight is told like a novel but interlaced with carefully documented technical facts.

The outcome of the author’s research makes this book a vital supplement to what we have known or believed about perhaps the most significant sea fight of the century.

Weisheit was a fraternity brother of ENS Mark Kelly and served on the board of the foundation established in Kelly’s name for charitable purposes. (excerpt from Wings of Gold of the Association of Naval Aviation)
