Knight Commander's Message: Spring 2005
Ben W. Satcher, Jr. | 4/27/2005

Welcome to the spring edition of your Kappa Alpha Journal.

Dear Brothers:

Welcome to the spring edition of your Kappa Alpha Journal. I hope each of you will take time to read the many interesting and informative articles presented in this edition.

Our cover story focuses on the many detrimental consequences of hazing, and I encourage all of you – actives and alumni alike – to pay close attention to the message.  Hazing has no place in Kappa Alpha Order. It violates all of the principles upon which our Order was founded and it contradicts Robert E. Lee’s definition of a gentleman. We must eliminate it from our active chapters, lest it eliminates us.

We also take this opportunity to take you to the front lines in Iraq. Let us all remember those brothers who are sacrificing so much or have paid the ultimate price, death, to protect us and secure a safer future for each of us as we read an account of Major Ashley Worboys, former assistant executive director for chapter services.

I want to commend all of our chapter presidents who attended the No. I’s Leadership Institute in January. The participation and educational programming was, again, exceptional. Many thanks to our staff and volunteers for their preparation and facilitation. I also want to thank the KAOEF for the funding they provide for this excellent program. And, of course, a huge thanks goes to our chapter presidents who arrived ready to learn and absorb tremendous amounts of information.

It was gratifying to see and hear of so many of our alumni chapters and active chapters hosting Convivium celebrations this year. I had the privilege of attending a
number of them and commend you for celebrating our founding and the birth of our spiritual founder, Robert E. Lee.

I close my message by thanking Todd Shelton, director of communications and editor of the Kappa Alpha Journal for his dedication and his outstanding work for KA.  Todd has chosen to move on to pursue other career opportunities and we wish him the very best. We are proud to welcome Scott Rowson as our new director of communications.  Scott was initiated into KA at Alpha Kappa Chapter at the University of Missouri.

Brothers, have a safe and enjoyable summer.  I hope to see many of you in Roanoke, Va., in August for our Convention and the dedication of our new headquarters.

Fraternally,

Ben W. Satcher, Jr.
