collegiate sports update

SOCCER

Three KA players led Stanford to a 7-6-5 record, led by goalie Robbie Fulton ’02, who received All-Pac-10 honorable mention and was on the Pac-10 All-Academic first team. He played 1,082:29 minutes; made 43 saves; and posted an 0.89 goals against average, the second-lowest in school history. Midfielder Todd Leber ’02 started eight games, scored four points and was on the Pac-10 All-Academic team, as was midfielder Bret Shimizu ’04, who played 17 games. Also seeing action for Stanford was defenseman Kyle Hency ’04.

The 11-7-2 West Texas A&M squad featured two KA regulars. Goalie Andy Young ’01 won All-Southwest Soccer Conference honorable mention after playing 1,673:27 minutes and posting seven shutouts. He gave up just 26 goals (1.40 goals against average) with 71 saves. Shawn Walker ’01 played in 18 games, scoring four points, and Bob Ewell ’04 also saw action. Forward Justin Arpan ’04 had nine starts for Delaware and forward Martin DeVaney ’04 got into 13 games for 12-7 Birmingham-Southern.

Seeing extensive action for 9-9 Presbyterian were midfielders Bennett Cope (six points), Bryan Padgett (five points) and Ross Carr ’03 (three points). Playing for Delta State were defenseman Travis Horn ’03 (15 starts), defenseman Justin Kennon (15 starts), forward Chris Hodges ’02 (11 starts), defenseman Davis Dedwylder (10 games) and goalie Will Everitt (27 saves). Hampden-Sydney goalie Pierce Buckingham ’03 saw 667:40 minutes of action in 14 games; made 22 saves; and had a goals against average of 1.48.

Six KAs led Rhodes to a 15-4-1 season. Forward Justin Sampson ’01 scored 17 points (six goals, five assists) and was named to the All-SCAC second team. Midfielder Nick Frankel ’01 scored 14 points (four goals, team high six assists) and was on the All-SCAC third team. Scoring 11 points (four goals, three assists) was midfielder Paul Staab ’02 while midfielder Michael Hohos ’02 added six points. Also seeing a lot action for Rhodes were defensemen Matt Grossman ’04 (13 games) and Matt Beckman ’01 (12 games).

The 12-7-1 Westminster squad claimed four KA players. Named to the All-SLIAC second team was Zack Gorla ’04, who led with 29 points and nine goals (including four game-winners). Gaining All-SLIAC honorable mention was midfielder Cole Prenger ’02, who scored six points. Midfielder Andy Chambers had 17 starts and nine points (three goals, three assists) and defenseman Pat Turner ’04 played in 13 games. Seeing action for the 15-1-4 Transylvania squad was defenseman Hamilton Alverson ’05.

Seeing action for Millsaps were seven KA players. Defenseman Brent Blackburn ’03 started 16 games and defenseman Franklin Childress ’03 had 14 starts and four points. Starting 11 games and scoring four points was midfielder Stuart Schmidt ’04 while forward Lee Pharr had 10 starts and four points. Other players at Millsaps included midfielder Joseph Wehby ’03 (10 starts), midfielder Sean Hampton (13 games) and forward Lee Emery (13 games).

The Georgetown squad featured midfielder Brian Hobbs ’03, defenseman Chris Denny ’04, midfielder Logan Stamper ’04 and defenseman John Vitali ’04. Midfielder Greg Basye and defenseman Eric Thompson were members of the 7-7-3 William Jewell squad while defenseman Mike Kennard ’04 was on the Texas Wesleyan team. 

Having a break out season as Kappa Alpha Order’s only pro soccer player in 2004 was midfielder Davy Arnaud (Gamma Sigma-West Texas A&M ’00), who completed his third pro year with the Kansas City Wizards. He led the team with 30 starts and 2,626 minutes played while ranking second in scoring with 26 points, including nine goals. In a 2-0 win over the Los Angeles Galaxy, Davy scored both goals.

WATER POLO

 After completing his fourth season as an All-American and three-time National Player of the Year, Tony Azevedo ’02 of Stanford has been proclaimed as the greatest water polo player in history. He led a group of 14 KA players to a 23-5 record in 2004 and finished his career with a record 332 goals after scoring 80 last fall. In January, he joined the professional ranks by signing with the Bissolati club team in the Italian League. A veteran of international competition, Tony played for the last two Olympic teams. At the 2004 Games, he was the second-leading scorer with 15 goals as the USA team placed seventh. Peter Hudnut (Alpha Pi-Stanford ’01) was an alternate on the USA Olympic team.

Also earning All-American first team honors for Stanford last fall was Thomas Hopkins ’03, who scored 60 goals. Goalie Chad Taylor ’03 was a key performer in goal for the Cardinal, posting 185 saves and goals against average of 4.78 in 27 starts. Backing him up was Beau Stockstill ’04, who made 27 saves in 14 games played. Other key players for Stanford were Tyler Drake ’03 (23 goals), Sam Tyre ’02 (13 goals), J.J. Garton ’04 (nine goals), Matt Moser ’02 (eight goals), Peter Varellas ’03 (five goals); Marcelio Pantuliano ’04 (five goals) and Trent Wiesen ’02 (four goals).

FOOTBALL

Deep snapper Casey Griffith ’01 won the Florida 2004 True Gator Award. He led the 7-5 squad with 122 special team plays and named to the NIC All-Fraternity All-American team. Teammate Hunter Cain ’04 saw action at tight end for the Gators. Other NCAA Division I-AA players included Stanford offensive tackle Tim Mattran ’03, who got into 10 contests; defensive end Taylor Bertin ’03 of Tulane, offensive tackle Danny Bowling ’04 of Duke, deep snapper Josh Long ’00 of Arkansas State, linebacker Kenneth Vandervoort ’03 of Alabama, tight end Eric Rosenthal ’04 of Virginia and the Mississippi duo of offensive lineman Ryan Jones ’02 and fullback Craig Holcomb ’02.

Four KAs were key players for 9-4 Delaware, which went to the Division I-AA playoffs. Defensive tackle Tom Park ’04 was named to three All-American third teams; the NIC All-Fraternity All-American first team; the ECAC All-East first team; and was a nominee for Academic All-American honors. Among his 48 tackles were 10 sacks (15th in Division I-AA) and 15.5 for losses. Kicker Brad Shushman ’04 was the top scorer with 82 points, including 15 field goals (in 22 attempts) and 39 consecutive extra points). His longest field goal was 48 yards against West Chester and he booted three FGs versus Richmond. Also playing for Delaware were linebacker Brett Wharton ’04, who got into 13 contests, and linebacker Zach Thomas ’04, who played in six games.

The 10-3 Furman Division I-AA playoff team featured All-Southern Conference second team punter Bo Moore ’02, who averaged 36.8 on 32 punts. His longest was 58 yards and 11 punts were downed inside the 20 yard line. He was also second team quarterback (139 passing yards, one rushing touchdown). Also seeing action for the Paladins was defensive back Austin Holmes ’04, who played in 12 games, offensive lineman John Newby ‘04 and linebacker Brent Blankenship ’02. Other Division I-AA players seeing action were Princeton wide receiver Clay Wolford ’02 and offensive lineman Craig Page ’01 of Elon, who got into eight games.

Three KA college head coaches made headlines during 2004. Paul Johnson (Delta Alpha-Western Carolina ’77) led Navy to a 10-2 record, its best season in 99 years, and a 34-19 win over New Mexico in the Emerald Bowl. He was named Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year by the Dodd Foundation in Atlanta. Dick Biddle (Alpha Phi-Duke ’69) led Colgate to a 7-4 record, his seventh straight season with seven wins or more. During the fall, his alma mater named him as a linebacker on the Duke All-Century Team.  Hal Mumme (Delta Rho-Valdosta State ’99) led Southeastern Louisiana to a 7-4 record in his second season at the school and was named head coach at New Mexico State in late December.

West Virginia Wesleyan featured the talents of five KA players. Defensive end Josh Roeth ’02 ranked fourth with 52 tackles (including nine for losses) and led with two fumble recoveries. Also at defensive end was Jeremy Lynch ’01 was in on 36 tackles while defensive back Scott Stein ’02 made 22 stops and broke up three passes. Also playing were linebacker Joe Tropea ’02 and running back Blake Conklin ’02. Seeing action for Presbyterian were back Gene Walpole ’04 and wide receiver Patrick Cook ’04 while wide receiver Corey Seawell ’04 had seven receptions for Newberry.

Earning All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first team selection for University of the South was defensive back Will Smith ’03, who was second with 58 tackles and had three interceptions. Back George Twitty ’04 led with 80 tackles; returned six kickoffs for a 25.3 average; and was on the All-SCAC second team, along with running back Harlin Hickerson ’04 (223 rushing yards, 21 catches for 231 yards). Defensive lineman Miles Wellesley ’05 also saw a lot of action for Sewanee, posting 29 tackles.

Seven KA players helped lead Westminster to a 6-3 record and UMAC South Division title. Defensive lineman Josh Moore ’04 was an All-UMAC South Division first teamer after leading with 8.5 sacks among his 46 stops. Linebacker Robert Peterson ’03 was on the UMAC All-Academic team and had 15 tackles. Running back Boone Brady ’04 gained 204 yards on 51 carries and scored four TDs. Other players included defensive back Jeff Gschwender ’03, lineman Brock Ezard ’02 and linebacker Jonathan Roop.

Co-captain/wide receiver John Barnwell ’02 of 6-4 Washington & Lee caught 22 passes for 221 yards and had seven punt returns for a 12.4 average. Hunter Whitfield ’04 had four starts on the offensive line and Hunter Dawkins ’04 was second team quarterback (12 of 17 for 135 yards). Also seeing action for W&L were linebacker Chris Joseph ’04, defensive back Ryan Neff ’04 and offensive lineman Chas Collins ’04. Kicker Clayton Williams ’04 booted three field goals and 13 extra points for Bethany and teammate Paul Duffy ’04 was an offensive lineman.

Leading a group of 12 KA players on the William Jewell squad was kicker Stephen Bader, the leading scorer with 49 points on nine field goals (in 14 attempts) and 22 extra points. Other key players were wide receiver Johnny Strada ’02, running back Cody Hunter ’02, tight ends Brian Lowry ’02 and Nick Opitz ’04; linebackers Justin Holm ’02 and Grant Sparks ’04; and defensive end Wade Smith ’04. Contributing to the 12-1 Georgetown team were second team quarterback Andy Ahlen ’04 (12 of 19 for 155 yards); defensive back Adam Meier ’02 (30 tackles); kicker Kena Cheatham ’04, an All-Mid-South Conference Academic selection); and offensive lineman Cameron Edwards ’04.

Other players during 2004 included the Rhodes duo of offensive linemen Andy Aubel ’01 and Nick McCamey ’02 (both of whom started games); defensive lineman Brandon Cronin ’04 of Missouri-Rolla; offensive linemen Robert Biedenham and Steven Whatley of Millsaps; and kicker Brandon Cunningham ’04 of West Georgia.

During the fall, Allen Brown (Alpha Upsilon-Mississippi ‘63) was honored by the Southeast Conference as one of its annual 12 Legends of SEC Football at the SEC awards dinner. He was a 1964 All-American end; a two-time All-SEC selection; and played for the Green Bay Packers in the first two Super Bowls. The Duke All-Century Team, selected in the fall, also included offensive lineman Mike McGee (Alpha Phi-Duke ’57) and tight end Claude “Tee” Moorman (Alpha Phi-Duke 58), in addition to Colgate head coach Dick Biddle.

In the National Football League, deep snapper David Binn (Alpha Xi-Cal-Berkeley ‘92) completed his 11th season with the San Diego Chargers. Tight end Doug Ziegler (Alpha Upsilon-Mississippi ’01) spent time on the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers practice squads and was re-signed by the 49ers for the 2005 season. Center Ben Claxton (Alpha Upsilon-Mississippi ’01) was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers for 2005 after being on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad last fall. Will Muschamp (Gamma-Georgia ‘92) joined the coaching staff of the Miami Dolphins in January after spending the last two seasons as defensive coordinator at Louisiana State.

OLYMPICS

In addition to the afore-mentioned Tony Azevedo’s exploits for the USA water polo team at the summer Olympic Games, a chapter mate of his at Stanford had an even better performance. Marcus Rogan (Alpha Pi-Stanford ’03) won a Silver Medal in two swimming events while competing for his native Austria. He placed second in both the 100 backstroke (54:35) and 200 backstroke (1:57.35).

CROSS COUNTRY

Competing again for the Furman squad was Hunter Hicklin ’02. At the Western Carolina 5K Invitational, he placed 29th with a time of 17:35 and had an 8K time of 29:15 at the Furman Invitational. Roland Lamb ’03 of Emory had a season best 8K time of 29:46 at the Georgia State Invitational. Tom Drabczyk ’04 competed in two meets for Virginia Wesleyan with a best finish of 35th at the Washington & Lee Invitational. A leading runner for the Rhodes squad was Casey Conley ’02, who had a best 8K time for the season was 28:53.54 at the Commodore Classic.

GOLF

Franklin Langham (Gamma-Georgia ‘87) is back on the PGA Tour this year after playing on the Nationwide Tour the last two seasons. In 2004, he placed fourth with earnings of $312,896 on the Nationwide circuit and added $18,450 at the PGA Tour’s BellSouth Classic.
