ELCs No More

For decades Kappa Alpha Order has leaned heavily on a small group of traveling chapter advisors to assist chapters and undergraduates around the country. Called Educational and Leadership Consultants, these young men – almost exclusively recent college graduates – have been the eyes and ears of the Order to its many chapters. This regional representative was the only member of the National Administrative Office staff many undergraduates would ever encounter. The role has been critical to Kappa Alpha’s success and produced many KA volunteer leaders and staff. Executive Director Larry S. Wiese, five other national office staff and two current Province Commanders are former ELCs.

Though the program has served our chapters well and consistently groomed Kappa Alpha’s best and brightest for future roles in the Order and beyond, KA is proud to announce a new and improved chapter consultant program. The men in the new positions, called Associate Directors for Chapter Services, will serve the chapters within one of four regions from a home base in a nearby major city. The primary responsibilities of an Associate Director for Chapter Services will be to:

4Partner with staff members, alumni, and university administrators to support Kappa Alpha chapters;
4Conduct yearly reviews of chapter operations
and provide goals and feedback to help chapters achieve excellence;
4Conduct educational workshops and presentations
to benefit both undergraduate and alumni members of the Order;
4Participate in the programming and execution of the Order’s programs and conferences;
4Assist in the creation, recolonization and education of provisional chapters;
4Help to mold the future of the Order through strategic planning.

The ADCS program will be comprised of four regions. Region 1 will be based in Lexington, Virginia or Washington, D.C. and serve the mid-Atlantic states as well as Northern California and Washington state. Region 2 will be based in Atlanta, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina or Charlotte, North Carolina and focus on the Deep South as well as Southern California and Arizona. Region 3 will operate from either Nashville, Tennessee or Lexington, Kentucky and will cover the Near South as well as Indiana and Ohio. Finally, Region 4, based in Dallas or Houston, Texas will be responsible for chapters in that state as well as in Oklahoma, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The Associate Director for Chapter Services program will allow Kappa Alpha Order to attract and retain the best and brightest KAs while also easing travel demands on the position. Associate Directors will be given significantly more responsibility than under the previous system, with alumni training and more intensive chapter goal-setting being important functions of the position. An ADCS will visit more than thirty chapters each year and report to the Director of Chapter Services. Finally, it is hoped that the ADCS positions will appeal to a broader spectrum of KA alumni, rather than exclusively the newly-graduated.
