Earning All-American first team honors and NCAA All-Tournament first team selection were Peter Varellas 03, the top scorer with 62 points, and Thomas Hopkins 03, who was second with 48 points. Goalie Sandy Hohener 06 made 171 saves and was named to the All-American and All-Tourney second teams. J. J. Garton 04, who scored 16 points, was on the All-Tourney second team and All-American third team. All four All-Americans also received Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors. Scoring 27 points for Stanford was Michael Bury 06, who was on the Academic All-MPSF team. Other Academic All-MPSF selections were Tyler Drake 03 (13 points), Marcello Pantuliano 04 (13 points) and Forrest Schwartz 04 (seven points). Also seeing action for the Cardinal squad were goalie Beau Stockstill 04 (20 saves), goalie David Carlson 03, Michael McCaffey 06 and Steven Wright 06. Completing his first season as one of the leading scorers (and highest-paid players) in the Italian Mens Pro League was Tony Avezedo (Alpha Pi-Stanford 02) of the Bissolati Cremona team. FOOTBALL Named to the National Interfraternity Conference All-Fraternity All-American first team, All-Atlantic 10 first team and All-East first team was Tom Parkes 04 of the 6-5 Delaware squad. He was also named the teams Outstanding Defensive Lineman after posting 31 tackles, five sacks and four blocked kicks. Long snapper Brett Wharton 04 was co-winner of the Blue Hens Unsung Hero Award and teammate Zach Thomas 04 saw action at defensive back. Starting six games for Stanford was Tim Mattran 03, who saw action at both center and offensive guard. Six KA players helped lead Furman to an 11-3 record and the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Austin Holmes 04 won the teams Best Defensive Back Award and was named to the All-Southern Conference second team. He led with four interceptions and 11 pass deflections in addition to making 56 tackles. Also contributing were wide receiver Lockwood Holmes 02, who played in 10 contests, offensive guard Ben Fulp 04, offensive tackle John Newby 04, wide receiver Carter Barfield 04 and defensive back Bynum Jaeger 05. Handling all the kickoffs for Sam Houston State was Stewart Pearcey 04 and defensive end Taylor Bertin 03 saw action for Tulane. Other Division I-A or I-AA squad members were linebacker Kenneth Vandervoort 03 of Alabama, offensive guard Danny Bowling 04 of Duke, offensive guard Ryan Jones 02 of Mississippi, kicker Grant Berg 05 of Texas Tech and linebacker Grayson Magee 05 of Northwestern State. Kicker Mike Hibbert 05 of West Virginia Wesleyan was named to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team after booting 12 field goals (including a 51-yarder) and 27 extra points. As a punter, he earned All-WVIAC honorable mention after averaging 37.7 on 47 boots. Teammate Josh Roeth 02 had 43 stops as a defensive end. Quarterback Gene Walpole 04 saw action for the 10-2 Presbyterian Division II playoff squad and offensive guard John Burnett 05 saw starting duty for the 7-4 Delta State team. Five KA players contributed to the Newberry cause. Second in scoring was Ryan Lukshis 05, who kicked seven field goals (three versus Carson-Newman) and 25 extra points. He also did the punting, with 43 for a 36.7 average and a best of 58 yards. Wide receiver Corey Seawell 04 had eight receptions for 120 yards, John Newell 05 handled long snapping duties and Derrick Hines 05 saw offensive line duty. Defensive players on the Missouri-Rolla squad were lineman Brandon Cronin 04, back Corey Taylor 05 and end Jacob Colbert. Contributing to a fine 7-3 season at Washington & Lee were six KA players. Named to the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference first team and the Virginia College Division All-State second team was offensive lineman Hunter Whitfield 04. Also playing in the W&L offensive line were Chas Collins 04, who gained All-ODAC honorable mention, and Alex Skotnicki 05. Splitting time at tight end were Ryan Neff 04 (28 receptions for 324 yards) and Bill Stokes 05 (nine catches for 100 yards). Others seeing action for W&L were quarterback Hunter Dawkins 04 and linebacker Chris Josephs 04. Four defensive standouts won postseason honors for University of the South. Linebacker Harlin Hickerson 04 led with 93 tackles and was named to the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference first team. Also on the All-SCAC first team was back Will Smith 03, who was second with 78 stops. Back George Twitty 04, who was named to the All-SCAC second team, led with nine pass deflections; returned nine kickoffs for a 25.6 yard average; and ranked third with 65 tackles. Receiving All-SCAC honorable mention was lineman Miles Wellesley 05, who posted 38 tackles. Westminster lineman Josh Moore 04 was named All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Defensive Player of the Year. He led the squad with a best 11 tackles for 54 yards in losses, had a co-high 5.5 sacks and ranked third with 59 stops. Teammate Josh Young 03 caught seven passes for 117 yards, ran back 14 kickoffs for a 17.2 average and returned six punts for a 6.7 average. Also seeing action for Westminster was linebacker Jonathan Roop 05, who played in seven contests, and wide receiver Jake Marshall 04. Earning All-Heart of America Athletic Conference first team honors for 5-5 William Jewell was kicker Stephen Bader 06, who scored 66 points. He hit 12 field goals (including a 50-yarder) in 13 attempts and was perfect on 30 extra point attempts. Other teammates included offensive lineman Matt Callaway 05, linebacker Justin Holm 02, back Austin Jones 05, defensive end Andrew Lacy 06 and tight end Lynn Nutt 06, among others. Seeing action for Bethany were kicker Clayton Williams 04 (two field goals, 14 extra points) and defensive back Eric Sperlazza 03. Members of the 9-3 Georgetown squad were kicker Keena Cheatham 04, back Chase Thomas 05 and linemen John Hendricks 05 and Ben Sheffey 05. Other players during 2005 included defensive end Nash Keim 03 of Rhodes and the Millsaps duo of offensive lineman Robert Biedenham 04 and kicker-punter Alan Landrum 06. Head coach Paul Johnson (Delta Alpha-Western Carolina 77) led 8-4 Navy to a 51-30 victory over Colorado State in the Poinsettia Bowl and a 30th ranking in the final poll. His Midshipmen led the nation in rushing and he has a 90-31 record after nine seasons. Colgate head coach Dick Biddle (Alpha Phi-Duke 69) led his 8-4 team to the Patriot League title and the NCAA Division I-AA playoff quarterfinals. Peter Gallagher (Beta Chi-West Virginia Wesleyan 90) finished his fifth season as head coach at Division III Ursinus College and Hal Mumme (Delta Rho-Valdosta State 99) completed his first season at New Mexico State. Named for induction into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame was the late Bob Bartholomew (Tau-Wake Forest 54), a three-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference tackle and first team All-American in 1954. After a knee injury ruined his pro career, he returned to his alma mater in 1957 and served 16 years as executive director of the Deacon Club prior to his death in 1984. Bob will be enshrined posthumously at the 43rd annual Hall of Fame ceremony in Raleigh, NC on May 11th. Completing his 12th NFL season with the San Diego Chargers was deep snapper David Binn (Alpha Xi-Cal-Berkeley 92). Center Ben Claxton (Alpha Upsilon-Mississippi 01) saw his first NFL action, appearing in two games for the Atlanta Falcons. After just one season as an NFL assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins, Will Muschamp (Gamma-Georgia 92) decided to return to the college ranks as defensive coordinator at Auburn. In 2003-04, he held the same post at Louisiana State. SOCCER Midfielder Michael Brown 06 of Stanford started 18 games and won Pac-10 All-Academic second team selection and All-Pac 10 honorable mention. Named to the Pac-10 All-Academic first team was midfielder Brett Shimizu 04 while midfielder Kyle Hency 04, who started 10 contests, gained Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention for the Cardinal team. Goalie Fritz Woelfel 05 was a member of the 12-5-3 Duke team which played in the NCAA Division I tournament. Three KAs were big contributors to the Davidson 14-6-1 season. Goalie Ben Ashton 05, who played 1,826 minutes, allowed just 24 goals (1.18 goals against average), made 41 saves and posted five shutouts. Midfielder Robby Hoak 05 was second in scoring with 19 points (including eight goals) and forward Tom Lavan 05 scored seven points. Forward Ross Steinhilber 05 saw action for the 8-8-4 Furman squad and striker Martin DeVaney 04 had 11 starts for the 12-5-1 Birmingham-Southern team. The 11-7-1 Presbyterian squad featured four key KA players. Attack Bryan Padgett 05 was second in scoring with 18 points (seven goals, four assists) and midfielder Joseph Grunewald 05 scored six points. Starting 15 games and scoring five points was midfielder Bennett Cope 05 while midfielder Ross Carr 03 also saw a lot of action. The Delta State squad featured key starters Travis Horn 03, Shane Brown 05, 27 [SPORTS PAGE] James Richards 06, Nick Anderson 06 and Cory Harvard 06. Helping lead 12-3-5 Transylvania to the NCAA Division III playoffs was defenseman Matt Vogel 06, who started every game and scored seven points. He was named to the All-Great Lakes Region first team and All-Heartland Athletic Conference first team, in addition to being team co-Most Valuable Player. Playing 436 minutes in goal for the 10-7-2 Hampden-Sydney squad was Pierce Buckingham 03, who had 26 saves and a 0.80 goals against average. Defenseman Chris Durbin 05 of the 6-6-4 Georgetown team earned All-Mid-South Conference second team honors and was named to the Mid-South All-Academic team. Five KAs were key players for the 8-8-2 Westminster team. Earning All-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference second team honors was midfielder Matt Mercer 05, who was second with 12 points (including five goals). The top scorer was attack Zack Gorla 04, who totaled 19 points (team high eight goals) and received All-SLIAC honorable mention. Third in scoring with nine points (including four goals) was midfielder Andy Chambers 05. Also seeing a lot of action for Westminster were defensemen Danny Vogler 05 and Pat Turner 04. Midfielder Preston Hollis 05 played in 16 games for the 9-7-3 Southwestern squad. Six KA players on the Millsaps team were led by top scorer Stuart Schmidt 04, who totaled 15 points, including a team-best seven goals. Starting all 18 games were attack Brent Blackburn 03 and defensemen Franklin Childers 03 and Joseph Wehby 03. Midfielder Lee Pharr was third with eight points and attack Michael Sawyer 04 also saw action. Good players for Rhodes were midfielder Michael Hohos 02, third-leading scorer with nine points; defenseman Matt Grossman 04, who started 16 games; and midfielder Parke Brackett 05. Two KA players saw action during the 2005 Major League Soccer season. Playing his fourth year for the Kansas City Wizards was midfielder Davy Arnaud (Gamma Sigma-West Texas A&M 00), who started 28 of the teams 31 games and scored 14 points (five goals, four assists). Seeing action as a goalie for the San Jose Earthquakes was Robbie Fulton (Alpha Pi-Stanford 02). CROSS COUNTRY Three KA runners led the Goldey-Beacom squad. Matt Lang 05 earned All-Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference honors with a 13th place finish (29:02.13) and also competed at the NCAA Division II regional meet. He also placed 15th at the Baptist Bible Fall Invitational and 20th at the Marywood College Invitational. Adin Lewis 03 placed 33rd at the Goldey-Beacon Invitational and Alan Passwater 05 also ran in several meets. Competing in every meet for William Jewell was Aaron Mick 05, who had a best 8K time of 28:30.75 at the NAIA Mid-States regional meet. His best 4K time was 23:13:19 at the Baker Invitational. Casey Conley 02 of Rhodes had a best 8K time of 28:56 at the Rhodes Invitational and was joined by teammate John Mowrey 02. Jon Gabriel 02 of Oglethorpe ran in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference meet and was joined on the squad by Chris Williams 05. Competing for Transylvania was Mark Rouse 04. |
